Surviving and Thriving in the Wilds of Southern Maryland: A Workshop for Kids, 9 to 13

Surviving and Thriving in the Wilds of Southern Maryland

A Workshop for Kids, 9 to 13

Dorothy Birch

Students will learn how centuries of people have used the native plants and animals of Maryland to survive and thrive.  There is free food, fiber and medicine in the woods and waters all around us, but would you know it if you saw it?  The kids will!  We'll learn to identify our resources and how they have been used for thousands of years, plus have some fun hiking and playing in nature.

Dorothy Birch is the Natural Resources Management teacher at the James A. Forrest Career and Technology Center in St. Mary's County. Raised in Virginia, Dorothy earned a bachelor's degree in environmental science and a master's degree in environmental education. She has observed and taught about nature and the environment in Texas, Florida, Louisiana, Virginia, and Maryland, informing and inspiring students from toddlers to seniors. Dorothy also earned the rank of Master Naturalist in both Virginia and Maryland and continues her conservation work both inside and outside the classroom
